Golden Palm-Cat (Paradoxurus zeylonensis)
Sinhalese: Kalawedda
Tamil: Maram nai
Description: A general overall rufous coat. The adult male, which is larger than the female, has an overall length of about 1 meter.
Distribution: found in the hills and lowlands throughout most of the country, apparently preffering the mid-hills, where it lives in the forests and jungles, but nowhere is it common. This species is endemic to sri lanka.
Habits: This palm-cat seems to be mostly nocturnal, but not altogether so. It is almost entirely arboreal, spending the day living up in hollow branch. It feeds on fruits and berries and any small animals, birds, insects, frogs and lizards that it catches.
Breeding: Very little is known, but it is probably somewhat similar to the common Palm-Cat.
