Common Sri Lanka Grey Mongoose (Herpestes edwardsii lanka)



Sinhalese:  Mugatiya

Tamil: Kirri, Kirri-pulle

Description: This mongoose has a grizzled grey colored coat with a whitish tip to its tail. The adult male is much larger than the female having an overall length of about 78 cms.

Distribution: Found in the low country dry zone, but more abundant in the north and east, uncommon in the south.

Breeding:
The gestation period appears to last about 60 days and usually 2 young are born. The female will normally dig her own hole for the birth.
