Sri Lanka Swamp Crocodile (Crocodylus Palustris Kimbula)



Sinhalese: Hale-Kimbula, Ala-kimbula

Tamil: Kulathi-muthele

Description: The Swamp Crocodiles are greenish olive with dark markings, and have been known to grow to almost 4 meters. The Swamp Crocodile is depicted opposite.

Distribution: Found in coastal lagoons, swamps and waterways in the low country.

Breeding:
The female digs a hole about 50 cm deep in a bank, usually of sand and lays anything up to 30 eggs. The older the female, the larger the size and number of eggs. The incubation period is about 60 days, and the mother guards the nest and the young when they hatch.
